STANDARD TRADE SHOW EXHIBIT DISPLAY TYPES & REGULATIONS
Types of Trade Show Booth Displays & Compliance Guidelines
In the realm of trade show exhibits, there are typically four primary booth configurations to consider based on your objectives: Linear, Perimeter, Peninsula, and Island. However, it’s essential to thoroughly review your event’s specific regulations beforehand, as guidelines may vary between convention centers and even within show halls, depending on the circumstances. For any inquiries regarding specific regulations, it’s advisable to reach out to show management for clarification.

Linear Booths
Commonly known as “in-line” booths, linear setups are typically arranged in a straight line, with neighboring exhibitors positioned to the immediate left and right. This arrangement leaves only one side exposed to the aisle. It’s worth noting that hanging signs are typically not permitted in this configuration.
Linear Booths typically measure 10′ wide and 10′ deep, with a maximum height of 8′. This height can be maintained on the sidewall of the booth up to a distance of 5′ from the front aisle.

Perimeter Booths
Similar to linear booths, perimeter booths back up to an outside wall of the exhibit facility rather than another exhibit located directly behind. Perimeter booths usually have a maximum height of 12′, maintained up to a distance of 5′ from the front aisle. Any remaining length of the sidewall cannot exceed 4′ in height. As with linear booths, hanging signs are typically not permitted in this setup.

Peninsula Booths
Peninsula booths are exposed to aisles on three sides and typically consist of a minimum of four booths. There are two types of peninsula booths available: those backing to linear booths and those backing to another peninsula booth (referred to as a “split island booth” in official documentation). It’s important to ensure that the exterior of the back wall of a peninsula booth is finished and free from logos or identifying information.
Depending on the setup, the maximum height of the back wall for a peninsula booth backed by linear booths is 4′ for a distance of 5′ from both side aisles, with a height of 16′ to 20′ in the center. For split island booths, the maximum height ranges from 16′ to 20′ throughout the booth.

Island Booths
An island booth is characterized by exposure to aisles on all four sides and is typically sized at 20′ by 20′ or larger.
These booths can utilize the entire space up to the maximum allowable height, which varies from 16′ to 20′, including signage.
Hanging signs are permitted above all island booths.
Additional Considerations
Multi-story exhibits may be permissible depending on the venue, with any booth featuring two or more levels considered multi-story.
Canopies, including ceilings, umbrellas, and canopy frames, can serve either decorative or functional purposes but must comply with line-of-sight requirements for the venue.
While hanging signs and graphics are often allowed for peninsula and island booths, they must adhere to standard space usage requirements and may require prior approval.
In terms of lighting, all fixtures must be directed inward toward the booth space and comply with fire safety regulations. Lighting that poses a potential hazard will not be permitted without prior approval from exhibition management.
